Celebrating the 7th edition of the MoonTimer Multicultural Lunar Calendar
for Women and Girls!

Due to the high cost of EVERYTHING this year, I am reducing the price of the calendars from $20 to $18. I am also offering discounted shipping on orders of 3 or more.

The messages that appear in the MoonTimer Calendar are not planned or scripted by me, as much as they are revealed to me. They are excavated, birthed and delivered from behind the veil.

Each month's image is assembled around a central character whose story unfolds according to a confluence of images that are graphically resonant. This non-linear process is intuitively driven.
I myself am often surprised, amused, or moved to tears by what shows up. The graphic elements have to find their own music, and this is how the meaning emerges. What I can only describe as "graphic jokes" show up from time to time, and I'm quite entertained by them.  But there are also tragic events and more serious issues that must be acknowledged. As a voice for the collective feminine, the calendar must comment.

There's always a dedicated panel designed with the girls in mind; in this edition, it's March. The calendar could be a good conversation starter with teens, tweens, and the younger ones - the 'ladies in waiting'. It's so important that we project positive expectations to them, and acknowledge those who are crossing the threshold from childhood to adulthood, irrevocably announced by the arrival of MoonTime. This calendar is a great way to honor them, or any woman in your life.

What is MoonTiming? It is the gift to us from our ancestral Grandmothers for regulating the cycle, which allows us a basis from which to address any other issues concerning our fertility or reproductive health. This method will work from the time a girl starts ovulating (a few years in from crossing the threshold). It's eminently practical, because when synchronized to the moon, we have a far more precise means of forecasting our next moontime - and that is very good news for a girl just beginning to manage this new phenomenon in her life, or for any busy woman (and don't most of us fit that description?). Best of all, this nature-based strategy has No Harmful Side Effects! Grandmother Tested and Approved for over 25,000 Years! Suitable for Goddess of All Ages!

I have noticed that other people may interpret the messages in the calendars quite differently than I do, and hope this means that the images contain sufficient archetypal 'charge' to speak the language of the viewer's internal landscape. For those unfamiliar, each calendar has its own 'down-sheet', where you can write in your appointments (if you actually use a calendar the old-school way). Each down-sheet has a host of odd, zany holidays you've possibly never hear of. But almost all of them are real (I admit to making up a few). I give an example for January, just to give you the idea.

Welcome to the MoonTimer Multicultural Lunar Calendar for Women and Girls. This is a unique and special gift for Goddess of All Ages, especially those who are approaching or crossing the threshold from childhood. It is inspired by a desire to create, for them, a positive expectation of this experience that is with us for 40 years, and to restore the respect our cycle deserves as the vehicle by which we ALL arrive here!

Possibly I went a bit overboard this year with images by Warwick Goble, Arthur Rakham, and Edmund Dulac, all famed illustrators of a bygone day. But the characters were so enchanting that they could not be refused! I hope you like the stories without words that they tell. If metaphor is a language describing the internal landscape, these might be Metaphors Made Visible. 

A Day on the Loch -- The Princess Out of School, a painting by Edward Robert Hughes, inspired this busy day on Loch Ness. Such an assortment of conveyances and characters is seldom seen.

As Long as the Waters Flow -- this could also have been called 'A Conversation with Hummingbird'. The topic under consideration is the health of the aquifers that nourish the corn. In the Hopi story, only Hummingbird was granted the power to intercede on behalf of The People, because she alone had not forgotten Mother Earth. 

Sobre Los Remedios - a healer perfects her medicinal formulas, using ancient skills and knowledge of the Earth, Moon and stars. Big Pharma gets dumped into the ocean. We are still so often wondering, is our medicine safe? An effective remedy is a treasure to be guarded as zealously as a dragon guards his geodes!

Sita Discovers Atlantis in Antartica - Sita, the consort of Ram, comes upon the remnants of Atlantean pyramids in an unlikely location, where a woman tenderly offers strawberries to a polar bear, while a white moose walks in from the spirit world to remind humanity that we are at the crossroads, and Admiral Byrd exits stage left, fleeing forces beyond his skill.
Although many seek for the treasure, it may be the re-emergent feminine consciousness that finds it, by providence, serendipity, kismet -- in other words, destiny, disguised as an accident.

Double Agent - Noor Inayat Khan was the daughter of an American mother and master musician and mystic Hazrat Inayat Khan (credited with having introduced Sufism to the West). She was the first woman sent into occupied France as a wireless radio operator, using codes to transmit clandestine messages to the Resistance Network.

Once again the year escapes with my having made insufficient postings. In looking at how this happens, I think I must make the blog more informal and less scholarly. Otherwise it becomes chore-ish, possibly bore-ish, and I'd rather enjoy it more-ish.

But - regardless of these shortcomings, the news of the hour is that the 2019 MoonTimer calendar has sold out, at least for ordering from me personally.

This year has seen an innovation in the design. The moon phases, previously constrained within the square 'block' of the month, have been released! Now they sail through the Milky Way, float over the mountains, and swim under the sea.

Here are a few examples of what you can expect from the 2019 edition (click to enlarge).

After one friend said that she didn't have enough room to write in her appointments, I started deleting last year's 'wacky' holidays (all of which are real, by the way). But there was an uproar from the multitudes (!) so I'm putting them back in - and even adding some. Still, this year you'll see more commentary relevant to moontime, from cultural and scientific sources. 

As always, the moon phases are emphasized to help you easily recognize the recurring pattern. 

Some panels are dedicated to particularly compelling real women...and this edition is dedicated to Sobonfu Somé, a teacher to me and many others.

...and there seems to always be one, usually landing in
NO-vember... addressing conditions of great concern.

Somehow, without my noticing, three Princesses have found their way into this edition. One is Torghut (Central Asia), one is Duwamish (Northwest Coast First Nations), and another - who is metaphoric rather than historic - is having difficulty sleeping, even on a huge pile of mattresses.

And this year I introduce an idea that I want to begin nurturing now, for the future - for anyone who would like to help me give away calendars to low-income, at-risk women and girls. Last year, calendars were donated to four local non-profits, and one out-of-state.

As much as anything, I am trying to gauge interest in this kind of partnering, where a donor could specify a particular non-profit agency to receive a gift of calendars. Someone might like to support homeless teens at Urban Peak, or sexual assault survivors served by The Blue Bench. A donor could deliver the calendars personally, or have us handle it, and could choose whether to give anonymously, or have their identity revealed to the recipients. Bundling these donations together ahead of time will bring down printing expenses, allowing more calendars to be given away.  I am looking into lower-cost printing alternatives to maximize quantities for giving next year.

A donation could also be designated to provide a workshop to the community needing support.

Perhaps this effort should be called the Christmas Special (you will be the one to make it special, for someone you have never met).

Christmas is solved!

April - The Spirit Horses of Her Ancestors

I was enthralled by this Uzbek woman, photo circa 1880's. Her sheer attitude is invigorating - she is her own Power Source. With utter certainty, she projects strength and self-reliance. She is saying, I have work to do, so don't bother me with trivialities, or you may find more trouble than you came here with.

I am not consciously aware of the full energetic impact of what I'm constructing, which is why coming back later with my 'rational mind' and dissecting the images has become valuable to me. The construction process is intuitively led -- I am looking only for the resonance of images (especially those that are seemingly unrelated) to find a harmony with each other, such that the final result causes your eye to wander inside the panel without getting stuck anywhere. All this takes place at a non-verbal level; it's aesthetically directed. 

So the first thing I realized here is, what, where and why is Uzbekistan?
That question led me on quite an internal journey. And I've found several reasons now why I would love to visit there. 

I am so drawn to their art. Among the images in the April panel are an Uzbek carpet (only a small slice of it remains, in the title section upper left);

....the prized blue ceramics, for which the Uzbeks are famously known;

...the work in silver, turquoise and carnelian 

...to die for.

It turns out that the Uzbeks had extraordinary skill with textiles. Their silk embroidery is enchanting, especially some of the antique work from nomadic tribal people known as the Lakai. The background fabric of felt is the canvas for the embroidery.

Their excellent facility with silk embroidery makes perfect sense, as the Uzbekistan cities of Samarkand, Bukhara, and Khiva were all stops on the Silk Road.

They even have a tradition of Ikat - a process of tye-dying the threads of the fabric before weaving it, a technique that I previously thought of as exclusive to Japanese culture. This is the only other cultural context in which I have encountered Ikat.

 Uzbekistan is in Central Asia, basically. Its temperatures normally range between 104 °F (40 °C) in the summers to 28 °F in the winters, although it can go as low as −40: the dreaded temperature where Centigrade and Fahrenheit get married. 

This isn't much different from Colorado, actually. The coldest I've experienced here was -36 °F, at a gig in Steamboat Springs. All the locals were rejoicing that they had beat out another local town for the coldest temperature that night. I thought them quite mad to celebrate this as a triumph. 

Like Colorado, it's landlocked. Even the five countries that border it are landlocked: Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Afghanistan, Turkmenistan, and Kazakhstan, with whom it shares an immense high desert called the Qizilqum ("red sand" ....hmmm...as in The Color-Redo).

But it was when I got to the subject of those horses that the real inner journey took me to unexpected destinations. Such treasures poured forth from those horses that I can't even do justice to it here; they will require their own post (pardon the pun, which only functions for those familiar with horse racing).  

So ... I must go to Uzbekistan at my first opportunity, hopefully via the Orient Express, to get my boots, 

my Chapan (coat),

my okbosh (wall hanging),

my carpet,

along with my blue ceramic kitchen wares and my carnelian jewelry. When everything is situated properly in my yurt,

I'll send you a postcard to come visit. 

How long it will take me to accomplish this is not known. Until then, steppe by steppe, slowly I turned.
